Lanny Davis And the Fine Art of Debate

lincolndouglas.jpgAmerica's favorite war-profiteering grifter "Lanny Davis" went on the Amy Goodman program last week to debate whether or not the Hondurans deserve representative democracy (they don't). In order to make his case on behalf of the junta, Davis relied on the public relations tactics that proved so successful with Hillary Clinton's loser campaign: victimization, shamelessness, constant lying, etc.

But haha, Lanny's debate opponent was NYU professor Greg Grandin, a person who had actually heard of Honduras before June, and Grandin has now published a fine list of the most egregious lies Lanny managed to squeeze into one short program. Here's a link to this modern-day Lincoln-Douglas, and Grandin's fact-checking Huffington Post column, enjoy.

There have also been similar threats from Colombian para groups in Zulia state, Venezuela.

More success in Colombia, putting its paramilitary 'past' behind them, way, way behind the conservative Uribe government:

97 killed, 2 disappeared in 'social cleansing': study

Tuesday, 11 August 2009 15:31 | Adriaan Alsema | Colombia Reports

Following the appearance of alleged paramilitary pamphlets, 97 people have been killed and two disappeared in acts of "social cleansing" throughout Colombia, independent investigation center CINEP has announced.

According to investigators, pamphlets threatening to kill prostitutes, drug users and "weirdos" appeared in almost three-quarters of the country.

In regions where the pamphlets were most widely distributed - the capital Bogota and the departments of Norte de Santander, Cordoba and Boyaca - the pamphlets were followed by higher numbers of reports of disappeared or murdered teenagers, prostitutes and people from the GLBT community.

The study showed that people from poor neighborhoods are most vulnerable to threats, forced disappearance and murder by the alleged paramilitary groups.

"We are very concerned that the use of fear and threats has become a tool for social control," CINEP executive Jorge Julio Mejía told Caracol Radio.

The threatening pamphlets appeared first in Medellin and appeared later in dozens of other Colombian cities.

Authorities previously blamed the FARC for spreading the threats, but NGOs say paramilitary groups are responsible.

Right. It had to be the FARC, because when you see pamphlets with the known names of paramilitary organizations, and then the outcome mirrors what the death squad narco-paramilitaries have always done, it's obviously proof of the lack of paramilitary activity.

Davis is not an expert, but a bought off hack. I don't think any actual scholar or researcher of Latin American affairs would be interested in his analysis per se, beyond what it indicated about his or his connections' attitudes.

Oops! that should be "Lanny".

@Utpal

I was referring to that Lanny guy.

@El Cid

Yes, there are quite a few who specialize in and study another country's political & economic system, people, etc.

Yet, as evidenced by Larry's interview, it certainly doesn't make one an "expert".

It isn't that he's closeted, it isn't that he's a bad liar, it isn't that he's a grifter -- none of those things bother me as much as the fact that he's riding the Clinton coattails.

That bothers me. Hillary was very quick to condemn the news out of Burma today. But where the hell is she on active death squads in Honduras? Or is that to "reckless" to bring up?

What's with the so-called "experts" on Latin America who have never lived there?

There are Latin American scholars who specialize in U.S. politics, sociology, and history, who have never lived here either.

Which "expert" are we talking about?

Mmmmmm, fresh meat!
