Ok so the other blogs and our own commenters have been SO EXCITED about this funny/weird video, so why not let's post it here too! Famous obese documentarian Michael Moore went on the Jimmie Kimmel teevee program the other night to talk about a strange encounter he had with Hugo Chavez in an Italian hotel this summer. Gross. Sorry. Let's try this again.
Michael Moore says he stayed up all late with Hugo Chavez drinking tequila like a real Mexican, before writing all of Chavez's speeches for him, drunk. Heating oil for everybody!
Of course this was all just a huge, awful joke lie, because really, tequila? And you can't just go knocking on Hugo Chavez's hotel room, also. Duh.

Also, a third of Americans knowing nothing about Moore, were riled up enough by Fox and Fiends to want to murder the guy after the Fahrenheit 9/11 speech at the Academy Awards. If he actually came out and declared he was a socialist, he'd have his own guntoting teabag entourage.

Oh lord...now I know why I so seldom read the pieces down the right-hand side of the page. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, of course, but their own facts? Erk.
The one that really took the biscuit for me was an anti-abortion screed that went into lengthy (and totally inaccurate) detail about what's natural and what's not. A steer and a mule can't breed, let alone with each other, but this bozo paired them up anyway. Wish I could remember the link, it was a howler.

The people at Vzla's state TV seem to have taken this much more lightly than Eva. One of them pointed out in a show that this was so obviously a joke. One difference might just be that Eva is (US)american, and ya know, liberals in the US have a reputation for being particularly humorless.

I sent a post on Eva's blog. Not been approved. I told her to relax and that Moore is a political satirist above all else. Also mentioned that the revolution needs intelligent commentary and not knee-jerk reactions... :S
But I've lost a lot of respect for Golinger on this point. It reveals a 'fan-club'-esque naivety to her political commentary - unable to 'let something go' that was in any-case rather insignificant first, and a clear joke second. The whole thing could have been diffused with a chuckle and a 'silly north american, tequila is for mexicans'- oh wait, thanks borev!

He's just fucking with his opposition, trying to stir them up to go crazy. I'd actually be surprised if Hugo Chavez didn't get the joke and weren't laughing himself. This is so obvious. Moore is clearly just making shit up about an innocuous photo to see if the idiot brigades will run with it.
I mean, he's hitting every cue -- including fulfilling the righties' fantasies that Michael Moore is such an evil Commie that he's writing speeches for Hugo Chavez, the most evilest anti-American in all of history until the next guy 4 minutes from now.
C'mon. Lighten up, Eva.

I really agree with jhadstate on this one. Eva should lighten up a little. It really doesn't matter whether Moore is embellishing. The much more important point is that Moore is humanizing Chavez by reenacting a skit in which Moore engages in playful dialogue with the Venezuelan president.

Well Michael has been all over the liberal-left divide over the years, going from backing Nader, back to groveling for Kerry, and now for Obama which he gives too much credit.
He has taken principled positions in the past (being fired from Mother Jones for refusing to publish an anti-Sandinista hit piece), although some would say the Fahrenheit 9/11 revealed some of the contradictions of his work in the commercial realm. This is no surprise as a lot of American liberals had the same trouble with climbing back post 9/11.
He's still a great filmmaker (Sicko being his best) but has his limitations. The irony of course is that he is a rabble-rousing provocateur and a deeply caring man, like Hugo.
I'll go see Capitalism: A Love Story...

Moore's films are very valuable.
However, he should clear this up immediately. This "joke" he made about Chavez reminds of the time he "joked" that Munmia was probably guilty - kind of stupidly pandering the right, or pretending to for whatever reason, then just making himself look silly to the people who support his work.

C'mon guys, get a sense of humor. He man is a comedian. All of his movies have been cuttingly sarcastic with just enough humor to keep the blood from flowing.
He and Hugo have a history and they like each other. I seriously doubt that the incident occurred as Moore said it did on Kimmel's show, but he was being a comedian.
Geez. It seems like if anyone north of the Gulf of Mexico or south of the Great Lakes says ANYTHING about Hugo that doesn't place their lips between his cheeks, they are slamming on Chavecito. (Sorry 'Bina. I'm being extemporaneous and plagiarizing at the same time.)
Let go of it. It was a joke that maybe some people (eva grolinger) were too committed and intense to appreciate, but you guys? The humor kngs and queens of the Latin American political world? I expected all of you to just laugh this off as a dumb-ass Michael Moored moment with a show host/comedian/MSM flunky that couldn't find Venezuela on a map. Or Venice for that matter.
