That is, if Alexander Cockburn truly had a consistent, pro-working class position, which he does not.

As for the nightmare of vanishing ice caps and inundating seas, the average Arctic ice coverage has essentially remained unchanged for the last 20 years, and has actually increased slightly over the last 3 years.

Iran can open up many doors in the mideast, thanks to its wide reach & centralized control.

So when nations like Brazil cozy up, you can bet it has very little to do with "peace", and everything do with getting a foot in the door.

Look at the alternative...

With the exception of Israel, Iran is the only serious nation in the region. They've bled enough to learn what works against superpowers (& what doesn't).

I'd say Uruguay is aiming for #2.

A UN representative denounces that threats against Colombian judges are coming from inside the house!

UN claims Colombian justice receiving threats from govt and police

The UN expressed concerns Wednesday about threats made against Colombian judicial officials and warned that some were coming from the government and police.

Following a 10-day visit to Colombia, the UN Rapporteur for the independence of the judiciary, Carina Knaul de Albuquerque, announced that judicial authorities had received threats, some of which had come directly from the national government and the police, reported news station Caracol Radio.

Knaul de Albuquerque noted the need for the government to increase security for the officials and lawyers who were being intimidated, as there are currently no guarantees enabling them to exercise their function efficiently and judicial independence was thus being undermined.

"These threats come from all current groups in Colombia. They come from drug traffickers, guerrillas and sometimes ... they can be from internal forces of the government and police," explained the rapporteur.

At least the mean old UN wasn't whining about the Colombian armed forces again, 'cause, don't they hear enough complaints already?

Armed Forces responsible for 71% of sexual assaults in 2008

Members of the Armed Forces were responsible for 71 percent of the 69 cases of sexual assault registered in Colombia in 2008, revealed a study on Wednesday.

A report regarding socio-political violence against women and young females which focuses on sexual abuse was presented before the association Mesa de Trabajo Mujer y Conflicto Armado, and sought to shed light on the various forms of violence perpetrated against this sector of the Colombian population.

According to the report, of the remaining percentage of 2008's 69 cases, 21.7 percent were attributed to guerrillas and 7.2 percent to paramilitary organizations, reported news agency EFE.

Love how Rory tries to conflate the killing of the Coup Resistance member with that of the daughter of the pro-coup tv host. All of the other killings have been of resistance members, and that is what the rest of the article claims. On top of that, it seems far more likely that pro-coup death squads killed her to distract from the international press that the repression is finally STARTING to get.

Good job, Rory, you have helped the human rights challenged dictatorship along on its quest to cover up brutal murders while justifying more to come.

THE Copenhagen climate summit was pretty much summed up in the high-level segment yesterday when Penny Wong's speech was interrupted by whistles and chanting and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez got a standing ovation.

That's meant to be an insult to Venezuela...but I don't see it. :)
