Cockburn is mistaking a faux left position of denying global warming and missing out on a real left question of asking which social classes, groups, and nations will be forced to pay for the changes required to adapt to the bourgeois nations' despoiling of the Earth's environment and who will profit from those expenditures.
That is, if Alexander Cockburn truly had a consistent, pro-working class position, which he does not.

As for the nightmare of vanishing ice caps and inundating seas, the average Arctic ice coverage has essentially remained unchanged for the last 20 years, and has actually increased slightly over the last 3 years.
KOOL-AID!!!
Yeah, that must be why the North Pole is now reachable by Russian subs, and why the Yanks are navigating our CANADIAN Northwest Passage.

LOL!
I agree that Uruguay is aiming for #2. I wonder what they are gonna exchange. Does Iran need milk? Beef?
But still, the fact that they are thinking of something beyond #1 is significant enough.
I like your "anarchist Salafis". I understand what you mean by that, but the mere suggestion of Salafis being "anarchist", at least in the conventional meaning of the latter expression, is funny :)

Just realized, I didn't explain #2 enough.
Iran can open up many doors in the mideast, thanks to its wide reach & centralized control.
So when nations like Brazil cozy up, you can bet it has very little to do with "peace", and everything do with getting a foot in the door.
Look at the alternative...
The Arab-Sunni's are a decentralized mess, unified only by the suffocating Americans or anarchist Salafists. There are a thousand doors, each leading Wiley Coyote off a cliff.

Lam Am can only have three tyes of "relations" with a badboy like Iran.
1) American relations.
Daddy, may I?
Maybe an Iranian ambassador here, or a dinner party there.
Think Funes-style groveling towards Uncle Sam.
2) Business relations.
I'll be back by 10, sir.
Iran runs Iraq & Lebanon. And, if it chooses, can activate many local Shia to bring many-a-Sunni-kingdom to their knees.
Think Lula style placation of American concerns.
3) Straight up gangsta relations!
My ammunition varies, my voice carries.
Watch me invite the whole world, me and the mob gettin' married!
With the exception of Israel, Iran is the only serious nation in the region. They've bled enough to learn what works against superpowers (& what doesn't).
Certain Lam Am nations (in the midst of a messy divorce) need that experience & knowledge.
Think Hugo Boss-of-all-Bosses middle finger to the north.
I'd say Uruguay is aiming for #2.

Well, it's not all fun in Copenhagen. The police are really kicking it up Gestapo style.
Hugo denounced the police repression at the big ALBA event on Thursday night.

A UN representative denounces that threats against Colombian judges are coming from inside the house!
At least the mean old UN wasn't whining about the Colombian armed forces again, 'cause, don't they hear enough complaints already?

Love how Rory tries to conflate the killing of the Coup Resistance member with that of the daughter of the pro-coup tv host. All of the other killings have been of resistance members, and that is what the rest of the article claims. On top of that, it seems far more likely that pro-coup death squads killed her to distract from the international press that the repression is finally STARTING to get.
Good job, Rory, you have helped the human rights challenged dictatorship along on its quest to cover up brutal murders while justifying more to come.

Okay BoRev.
You & Rory win for best headline.
But me & Rupert win for best sub-headline:

THE Copenhagen climate summit was pretty much summed up in the high-level segment yesterday when Penny Wong's speech was interrupted by whistles and chanting and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez got a standing ovation.
That's meant to be an insult to Venezuela...but I don't see it. :)
