Yes, 'The Hindu' is a great resource for South Asian news. Apart from the great political coverage, I use it as a companion to Jane's for defense-related South Asian news.
On your WEIRD article...
He should have studied rap.
He'd learn to channel that rage into catchy rhymes & metaphors...while getting paid.
Instead, he'll probably end up in jail....tossing salad.

Paul: here's something else from The Hindu from you:
--------------------------
IIT alumnus Vikram Buddhi was sentenced to 57 months in prison and three years of supervised release for posting hate messages in 2006 to the then President George W Bush.
Buddhi, who was arrested in 2006, was sentenced by senior Judge James T Moody after being convicted of making threats to Bush, the then Vice President Dick Cheney and their wives, and calling for bombings of US infrastructure.
The 38-year-old Phd student of Purdue University, will have to spend an additional three years under “supervised release” under the supervision of a probation officer, the court said.
He can though appeal the sentence in a Chicago court within 10 days of this judgement. Since he has already been in prison since April 2006, the months are likely to be deducted from his sentence term.
Buddhi, who represented himself during the sentence hearing after firing his lawyer, said earlier that he was given the short end of the stick, and claimed the trial had been unfair.
Before the sentencing Buddhi submitted to the judge that he had got “ineffective assistance” of the counsel and said it was the “gravest error of justice“.
Buddhi had fired his lawyer Arlington Foley for not discussing the case properly, and said would “involuntarily represent himself” at the hearing.
Keywords: IIT, Vikram Buddhi, United States, George W Bush, Dick Cheney
---------------------------
Vikram Buddhi and I share the same alma mater.

Oops. That should have read:
It just occurred to me the US Treasury Dept. has claimed that Rodriguez Chacin (ex-interior minister), Henry Silva (ex-chief of DISIP) and Hugo Carvajal (chief of military intelligence) were involved in some kind of drugs for arms deal.

El_Cid: It just occurred to me the US Treasury Dept. has claimed that Rodriguez Chacin (ex-interior minister), Henry Silva (ex-chief of DISIP) and Hugo Carvajal (chief of military intelligence). The evidence apparently comes from DAS, pretty much (including the ineffable laptop). I think it's the same stuff repeated. Now they've added Makled into the mix.

A stretch? Hardly.
A metaphor, surely.
Now, a "stretch" might be Claudia admitting to Duston:
"Nobody snuggles with Evo.
You strap yourself in and feeeeel the Geeee's!"

The Miami Herald report doesn't actually say "high" official, though "officials in Venezuelan govt." is rather vague.
Colombian TV has been screeching anti-Vzlan rhetoric for some time now, but the funniest part was lurid stuff about the lack of "seguridad", which is funny, because Colombia's murder rate is about twice Vzla's (Vzla's is quite bad now, as is).

This is also Hugo Chavez' fault, even though it's happening in Colombia, because, otherwise, it's the sort of thing which you'd be reading about, because the press would cover it!
Clearly the fact that high-ranking Colombian military officials have been collaborating with massacring, drug-running paramilitaries who continue to work without harassment in entire sections of the country means that poor Alvaro Uribe is saddled with rogue criminal elements totally not under his influence, whereas if someone farts in Venezuela it's a Hugo Chavez plot.
I wish all you people would stop making fun of Trig Palin and Alvaro Uribe! They don't deserve it!

A chunk of the Makled family is in jail in Vzla actually (a couple of brothers, I think). The suspicion was that Felipe Acosta Carles (the Chavista governor of Carabobo, expelled from the party in 2007 because of his connections with Makled) was in cahoots with him.

Which one of the following 3 paragraphs do you anticipate not hearing from the anti-Chavez scream-athonistas in the U.S. press?
This now proves that Hugo Chavez was aiding the FARC rebels, because, you see, if Venezuelan high officials are found to have collaborated with narco-traffickers, then it goes all the way up, but when 1/3 of the Colombian Congress is under investigation for narco-paramilitary links, well, SHUT UP, it does not.
Meanwhile, in Colombia, a mass grave with 2,000+ bodies in it is discovered by meddling foreign observers...
The fact that it appears to investigators that many of them were assassinated this past year will also be Hugo Chavez' fault, because, SHUT UP.
